Dogs are a lot like people, when they are sick they act like they do not feel well
and should visit the doctor. Ears should be checked at home weekly. Small and toy
breed dogs seem to have the most dental disease so have them evaluated by the doctor
and keep up on routine cleaning, polishing, and fluoride.
Cats and birds are good at hiding illness so more careful home observation and regular
doctor visits are crucial to good health care. Avian patients should visit the doctor
at least twice a year. Fecal samples and blood work are excellent tools for preventive
health care in birds. Perching difficulty and feather fluffing are signs of health
problems. Small and medium size birds should be brought in to see the doctor in
their home cage so the doctor can evaluate their environment. Beak trims for malocclusions
as well as nail trims and correct balanced wing trims are needed for some avian
patients. Diet consultation is always a topic during your bird's visit.
Small animals and reptiles should see the doctor at least once a year. Their cages
or aquariums should be evaluated as well. Husbandry practices are very important
in these small pets.
Parasite control with fecal checks and heartworm prevention is recommended.
Animal diseases that are contagious to man are called Zoonotic diseases. This group
of diseases continues to cause concern but most can be prevented with annual exams,
parasite control and animal vaccination. Awareness of this group is always needed.
Annual and sometimes biannual doctor visits are the best way to stay ahead of health
concerns.
